Wall Pockets

This display of Wall Pockets hangs on my porch. I started my collection of Wall Pockets twenty five years ago, after moving into our home. The prevues owner had a wonderful collection that hung in this same spot. When she moved the nails remained in the brick. It only seemed natural to continue the tradition of
 Wall Pockets.
Wall Pockets were originally intended for rooting plants. Sometimes they are called "rooters". Now they are considered a valuable collectable.
Wall pockets come in many shapes and sizes.
You can find Wall Pockets in antique stores, flea markets, garage or estate sales. Prices will very greatly, depending on there origin, age and quality.
The Wall Pocket above is Czechoslovakian.
At one time the finish on this Wall Pocket was called,"The Old Black Japan." This wall pocket was made in the 1930's,the finish is supposed to simulate tree bark cloisonne.

Many different counties and potteries have made and continue to make Wall Pockets. They can be beautiful or whimsical. Think of a theme and it is very possible someone out there made it into a wall pocket.

I have seen guitars, irons, fish, ladies heads, people, shoes, hats, teapots, teacups. My favorite themes are the birds, flowers and fruit.

Below you will see, Wall Pockets from Japan with a floral theme.

If Wall Pockets are a collection you are interested in, Collectors Guide To WALL POCKETS Affordable & Other$, by Marvin and Joy Gibson may be helpful. This book has a lot of photos that will help you identify your Wall Pockets.
